Vast open, expensive, varied, and fenceless, Mongolia is a fantastic country for camping.
On Mongolian horseback adventure, you will travel through the wilderness, camping overnights to reach the attractive sites.
We will supply tents, mats, sleeping bags, kitchen tent, shower tent (when the weather is warm), and cooking equipment.
About the camping site, the tours were planned with overnights in ideal destinations for a day horseback riding, where the nature is scenic for the rider’s enjoyment besides we considered the water and pasture for the horses.
Bringing your sleeping bag is an alternative. If you come with your sleeping bag or buy one for you, please consider the cool temperature at night.
Consult with your local guides about the tent pitching spots for safe camping.
• Do not camp near river beds and lower areas of valleys as the flash flood can happen.
• Do not camp near a water source as Mongolia nomads use the surface water for drinking.
• Do not camp near still water which attracts flies and mosquitoes
• Burning dried cow and horse dung helps you keep the mosquitoes away.
• Do not pitch your tent under trees, particularly a single tree in the open field to prevent lightning. Also, camp away from tall objects and single rock shelter, etc.
• Anticipate the wind and choose a sheltered area. In Mongolia, the wind usually blows from the north and northwest.
• Zip your tent well to keep insects outside of your tent
• Protect your belongings and food from nocturnal visitors and dogs, etc.
• Camping near nomads’ ger is a good idea for solo campers and independent travelers. But meet the nomads and ask if they are fine with this. The downside of camping the nomads’ ger is the dog barking at night if you are a light sleeper.
The best time for a camping trip in Mongolia is between the end of May and mid of September. The warmest month is July, with an average temperature of +5⁰C to +19⁰C at night. You are better to prepare for occasional below 0⁰C in June, August, September, and October. Mongolian weather fluctuates a lot due to the overall high altitude and the wind. Snowfall could occur in the mountainous area even in summer, in July and the beginning of August, the warmest months.
Mongolia is less crowded at the end of May and the first half of June. The short grass attracts fewer flies. Snow falls could occur in all regions, not regarding the altitude.
August is the most suitable season for camping, not too cold, not too hot and it rains less compared to July. Expect +7⁰C to +15⁰C evening through the morning. The temperature could drop near or below 0⁰C at night at the end of the month.
September is another good month for both camping and horseback riding. Warm clothes along with appropriate gear could help you stay comfortable in cooling weather without rain, flies, and wind. Expect below 0⁰C temperatures at night. The daylight temperature fluctuates between 0⁰C to +10⁰C at its coldest and +10⁰C to +25⁰C on average.
Generally, you could camp in most places in Mongolia. Although, you should get permission from the rangers or the national park/strictly protected area offices in Ulaanbaatar/provincial center/town centers if you are camping in strictly protected areas, state worshipped areas, and the endangered species habitat areas.
Ulaanbaatar is the place you could buy camping gear. In Ulaanbaatar, several shops sell quality or brand outdoor gear.
You can find cheaper alternatives in the Narantuul Market (closed on Tuesdays). At the Narantuul, the choice differentiates from poor quality cheap ones to better quality ones at a fair price those could be as good as some brands being sold at the shops.
