When is the Best Time for Mongolia Horse Riding

Diverse in the landscape, truly wild, the horse culture still exists, and there are more horses than the human population, Mongolia is one of the premier horse riding destinations in the world.

Except for the facts above, choosing the best month for your Mongolia horse riding adventure makes your holiday.

To help you choose the right time for your Mongolian horseback adventure, we have prepared the following horse riding-wise monthly Mongolian weather. Please consider Mongolian altitude and regional diversity when planning your holiday. +25⁰C pleasant day could turn into a snowy day in 2 hours.

Let’s start with the best times to ride horses in Mongolia.

AUGUST is the absolute best month for riding in terms of weather and horse strength. In August, the horses are vigorous and fat enough to cover the long-distance after the summer months-long grazing. The weather is pleasant with less rain, not too hot,  and fewer flies around. Daylight temperature ranges between +23⁰C and +33⁰C in the first half of August. The last half is cooler, with temperatures of +15⁰C to +27⁰C, more suitable for horse travel. Expect the night temperature 10 to 15⁰C lower.

JULY is another good month for horse riding. It is the warmest as well as the wettest month with occasional showers. Pleasant warm weather and the national holiday Naadam Festival attracts many visitors to Mongolia, which means July is a bit crowded by tourists compared to other months. Although, consider bugs and flies when camping and riding in July. July temperature ranges from +27⁰C to + 35⁰C daytime and +12⁰C to + 23⁰C at night.

JUNE – The weather starts to warm up. Not cold, not wet, and least touristy, June is one of the appropriate months for Mongolian horse riding. When observing the yearly weather, the beginning of June temperature occasionally lows with random snowfalls in the mountainous areas. Ice on large lakes in northern Mongolia and the snow cover from winter in western Mongolia remain till mid-June. Expect +10⁰C to +25⁰C daytime and +5⁰C to +16⁰C at night.

SEPTEMBER – Deal with the evening and night cool temperature as the other horseback adventurers do. Otherwise, September is the best month for horseback adventure, based on the clients’ experience. Comfortable both for the rider and horse, without flies, rain, and hot. Expect +8⁰C to +25⁰C daytime and -2⁰C to +12⁰C at night.

OCTOBER – much colder at night compared with September. Colorful autumn days of October are enjoyable for horseback riding. October is the end of the tourist season. Riders enjoy the day with warmer clothes, but the night temperatures are usually below 0⁰C. Would you mind camping below 0⁰C? You can ride and discover the horse-based nomadic culture while staying at the nomad’s home. October daylight temperature ranges from 0⁰C to 15⁰C on average. The temperature remains +20⁰C till 20th in some October.

MAY – In terms of weather, May is warmer than October but inflexible with sudden changes in a day. Sometimes stormy, sometimes snowy. On the other hand, Mongolian horses are not sturdy enough for long-distance riding after the severe winter and spring. Even though the horses are okay for shorter distance riding of 20-30 km in a day. Thus, please consider your daily riding distance when traveling Mongolia on horseback in May. Expect +5⁰C to +25⁰C daytime and -5⁰C to +13⁰C at night.

NOVEMBER through JANUARY – The winter months of Mongolia are not for horseback riding holidays. However, Mongolia is still beautiful in winter and culturally attractive for lifestyle discoverers and adventure seekers. The winter visitors manage to ride for a few hours a day at -10⁰C to -25⁰C. Eagle hunting or eagle training is another popular winter activity in Mongolia except for discovering the nomadic life and experiencing winter Mongolia on horseback.

FEBRUARY through APRIL – Those months are warmer than November, December and January. Mongolian horses and other animals are self-fed on dried grass uncovering snow by hooves. Therefore the horses remain skinny and weak after the struggle against the cold weather and lack of feed. We would say these months are not suitable for horse riding or try it just for 1 to 3 hours in a day as an experience.
